Admissions

The admission process of various top institutes will be starting soon. Last date for submission will come soon after the GATE results. So it would be nice to be mentally prepared for it, to avoid taking decisions in a hurry.

Some guidelines:
1) A masters degree is meant to help a person specialize in a particular field. Decide which areas you would like to specialize in. Need not be a single one, pick 2 or 3 from which you can finalize one after you join a program.
2) Go through the websites of the institutes that you are interested in, and check the profiles of the professors working in your area of interest.
3) Pick an institute based on its strength in your area of interest. Placements should NOT be the primary criterion. If you do well in your area of interest, getting placed will be easy.
4) Talk to the students in your target institutes to find how accurate your assessment (and the general perception) of the institute is.
5) Take a look at inter-disciplinary programs; for example MTech in EET, JCA at IITD, MTech in Information Security at IITG. Getting admitted for these specializations might be slightly easier than in the conventional MTech programs. Same case with the 3-year MTech RA program at IITB.
6) Take a look at the research based MS/MSc programs. These are easier to get into than MTech, and are equally good (or better, if you intend to do a PhD) than MTech. Some institutes may even give a direct entry to PhD for exceptionally good students.
